Parents Caring for Parents

Posted by Sara Schaefer Munoz

Forbes.com this week notes a little-discussed executive stressor: taking care of mom and dad.

The piece, CEO Caregivers, talks about a money manager who spent hours each week driving to his parents house to check on them and take them to the doctor. The executive eventually resorted to a typical strategy: outsourcing his parents' care. But not everyone can afford professional oversight for their parents. And even if an elderly relative resides in, say, an senior living facility, there's still plenty they will need help with.

Witness the call my busy father received two weeks ago from my grandfather, in a panic over a perceived denture emergency. As dedicated as my father is, I'm sure he's not alone among people who get drained negotiating with independent-minded, older parents, especially if they fear everything is the equivalent of a five-alarm fire or worse, are resistant to medical intervention.

Though I must boast that my 97-year-old grandfather is the only nonagenarian I know who uses email his hearing makes it hard for him to talk on the phone many elderly parents aren't online, don't use cell phones or even answering machines. This can compound the anxiety of today's wired professionals.

While it's wonderful to have parents around especially to spend time with grand- or greatchildren handling their decline can be challenging for people who also have jobs and children of their own. How do you cope?
